If you told me at the beginning of 2020 that I would be sheltering in place and working from home for practically the entire year I would have first hugged you. Then I would have told you you were crazy. No way would that ever happen. Yet here I am at the start of 2021 and I'm still working from home for the nth week, nth month in a row. All because of Covid-19.
But this is not a post about the novel coronavirus. This is a post about why I chose creative lettering and calligraphy as a hobby. It’s a post about why you should, too.
For starters, it’s a great creative outlet. And you don’t need to have good handwriting to be able to do creative lettering or calligraphy. With lettering, you are actually drawing your letters and words. With calligraphy, you combine basic strokes to create the letters. For both, it’s all about taking time and having patience when you are drawing and forming your letters. Not about your penmanship.
It doesn't cost a lot of money to get into the hobby. Seriously. All you really need to start is something to write with and something to write on Of course when you get deeper into it, you spend a little more. But if you just want to give it a go, just grab a pencil and piece of paper and you're golden.
It’s a hobby that you can do almost anywhere. As a mother of 3, something I can do on the go is up there in my criteria for good hobbies to start.
It’s therapeutic. It’s great for relaxation. It’s calming. And in this world we’re living in now, who couldn’t use a little bit of calm and relaxation in their day?
You can actually monetize this hobby. When you get really good at it and start to really enjoy it, why not make money from it? Think of all the brides and groom who need beautiful calligraphy. And all of the event planners who need some creative signs. You can start an Etsy where you can show off your work and offer your services. By no means am I telling you should quit your day job but wouldn’t it be cool to have a little extra side cash for doing something you love?
So are you convinced?
