We are neck-deep into the holiday shopping season and if you’re Filipino-American like me, chances are that you come from a huge family and have tons of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, nieces and nephews twice removed, three times removed (you get my drift?) to buy gifts for.
The other day, I was commiserating with a friend about all the shopping we still needed to get done. When I told her that I had my adult, college-graduate, already-have-a-family-of-their-own niece and nephews on my list, she was shocked and surprised. According to her, if these ‘kids’ in my life are past the age of 21 and already have jobs/families of their own, they should then shift from ‘giftee’ to ‘gifter’ for the kids in their lives.
For me, that’s just crazy talk. No matter how old they get and how many kids they have, they are still my niece and nephews. The ones I once babysat, took out when I was single and childless, called ‘the cutest baby in the world’, bragged about with my friends. Of course I’m still going to keep them on my Xmas list.
Now I’m asking you what you think? Is it silly that I still buy Christmas presents for them? Do you still buy gifts for the older nieces and nephews in your lives?
This inquiring mind would like to know.
